CHAPTER V: An Old Move Inadvertently Repeated

Summary

Charly finds happiness in serving Eustacia. He brings her small pretty objects from Heath to make her happy. Her grandfather informs her that Clym has moved to Blooms-End.

Charly has planned a special surprise for Eustacia on November 5, Guy Fawkes Day. He lights a fire on the day and sends her a message asking her to look out of the window. At first, she is not aware of the fire's implications, but soon she recognizes that Wildeve may consider this as signal. Soon she hears the splash of a stone in the pond, she feels the presence of Wildeve. He appears soon and expresses his sympathy to her. He says that he is to blame for her plight. But she denies it saying "Not you. This place I live in." Then she asks him to help her to get to Budmouth, from where she will manage to go to Paris. He expresses his willingness to accompany her but she does not reply. She tells him that she will give him a reply as she has yet to decide over it.
