      Mrs. Gummidge is the widow of Mr. Gummidge, Mr. Peggotty's partner who died very poor, she is introduced as an inmate of Mr. Peggotty's house. She does the cooking and cleaning for Mr. Peggotty, Ham and Emily. She did not always make herself so agreeable as she might have been expected to. She always feels lonely and isolated. Her perpetual grievance was that she is a "lone lorn creetur" and everything went contrary with her. She sits forever in the house on Yarmouth sands and shakes her head and wipes her eyes a monument of selfish misery. However she turned over a new leaf at the time of Emily's elopement and proved to be a tower of strength.
