Mrs. Gummidge is the widow of Mr. Gummidge, Mr. Peggotty's partner who died very poor, she is introduced as an inmate of Mr. Peggotty's house. She does the cooking and cleaning for Mr. Peggotty, Ham and Emily. She did not always make herself so agreeable as she might have been expected to. She always feels lonely and isolated. Her perpetual grievance was that she is a "lone lorn creetur" and everything went contrary with her.
