      Thomas Wilson as presented by William Somerset Maugham in this story is a common human being who had made a particular choice which by giving up his job at the age of 35 and settled himself in Capri for 25 years to enjoy a life of complete leisure in the midst of natural beauties. Thomas Wilson was a very ordinary man received and aloof and he did not mix with others. His only admirable quality was the deep passion for nature and for that passion his destiny forced him to make a very unusual choice. Maugham presents the character of Thomas Wilson as an odd type of men. He had enjoyed a life of complete worklessness in Capri but for this he suffered a lot.

      Now as a character Wilson is found occupied with his selfish pursued of happiness. And his tragedy arises out for his total choice of living in Capri. By nature Wilson is found a learn having a deep knowledge of history. But ultimately Wilson brings about his own misery in the last six year of his life. His sufferings and humiliations flow naturally from his odd choice of living a carefree life in Capri. At the end of the story Wilson has met his tragic destiny when he is found dead one morning on mountain side, lying peacefully. Thus as a character we feel pity for this poor person and his sufferings are however pathetic. These could be no offer end to his life for the choice he made, but he made the choice for his passion for the beauty of nature, for the zest. For enjoyments of life and leisure that ultimately make his life and sufferings extremely pathetic.

      We encounter that, after the flow of money expire of Thomas Wilson, he fell on worst days and loss the will-power to convey his life any further. There was no hopes to live for, Wilson once try to give up his life. He was taken to hospital for treatment. Then he was released that, but he became mentally insane. After that he lived six more years. His maid servant, Assunta arrange shelter and food for him. Her husband made him work for them. Then one night he reach out to see the beauty of a moonlight mountain and he was found lying on the mountainside with his eyes closed for ever. The story teller cynically portrait that Wilson had taken his last breath glancing the sight of moonlight.
