But cannot I.....this to naught? (Book I, Lines 141-144)

Summary

This passage gives a still more eloquent expression to Saturn’s growing confidence for creating a new world in lieu of the one that he has lost. He is determined to make up the loss one way or the other. He is in search of “another chaos” out of which to create a new universe. (It is believed that the original universe was created out of chaos).

Critical Analysis

Keats’s Saturn reminds us of Milton’s Satan who is still more confident and haughty. Satan does not want to rule the world of Adam and Eve as much out of a desire to have a new kingdom under his rule as to take revenge against God.
