Chapter 56: The New Wound and the Old

David Copperfield informed Mrs. Steerforth and Rosa Dartle of Steerforth's tragic death. On hearing this news Rosa Dartie lost her composure and started to quarrel with Mrs. Steerforth like a mad woman. She accused her of pride and corrupting her son. In her fury she even disclosed that she loved Steerforth devotedly. David requested Rosa Dartle to show some compassion towards Mrs. Steerforth. Rosa cursed David as well. She said that it was an evil hour when he visited them for the first time. Then she tried to shake Mrs. Steerforth to her senses. David left the place after a while. Steerforth's body was kept in his mother's room.
