Vakil Mahmoud Ali was the staunch supporter and friend of Aziz. Ronny Heaslop, the City magistrate, had invited him to smoke but the Vakil began to spread the news that he was favored by the Magistrate and so Heaslop began to insult him at court. He hated all Englishmen. He figured chiefly at the trial of Aziz when he made a dramatic exit at the mention of Mrs. Moore's name, he called upon the Magistrate to send for the old lady as a witness, his emotional out-burst was ludicrous and unbecoming of a lawyer, he played an important part in the "battle of the chairs" in which the Englishmen had to leave their special seats and sit with the general public.
