Thus it is that thy joy in me is so full. Thus it is that thou hast come down to me. O thou lord of all heavens, where would be thy love if I were not?

Thou hast taken me as thy partner of all this wealth. In my heart is the endless play of thy delight. In my life thy will is ever taking shape.

And for this, thou who art the King of kings hast decked thyself in beauty to captivate my heart. And for this thy love loses itself in the love of thy lover, and there art thou seen in the perfect union of two.

Thus it is that thy joy in me is so full. Thus it is that thou hast come down to me. O thou lord of all heavens, where would be thy love if I were not?
Gitanjali Poem no. 56

Summary

The lyric is again in the same flow of love. Here too, Tagore celebrates the theme of love. He depicted himself as a lover and God as his beloved. The poet is happy because God loves him. This is his love which has compelled Him to come down to the poet. Such is the power of true devoted love. Addressing the Lord of the Heavens, the poet says that His love would have been of no use it he hadn't been there. God needs man's love as much as man needs His. Man's existence is necessary for the sake of establishing God's full glory. That is why God takes joy in the creation of glorious and beautiful forms of life. God has created his lila but He needs man to share His joy in creation. His will is realized only through the man.

It is because of love that God, king of kings, has decorated Himself in the beauty and splendour of nature in order to captivate man's heart and win his love. The perfection of love is hence achieved when the love of divine mingles with the love of human, the union of this love is noble and God is always there in this perfection of love.

Critical Analysis

The poem sings the praise of love. The lover and the beloved lose themselves in their love and attain the bliss of a perfect union. Such is the power of love that it compels even the king of king to comedown and meet His beloved. True love can always feel the presence of bliss of the Almighty. The style and technique which Tagore has revealed in his love poetry is really laudable. He makes full and effective use of devices of understatement and suggestion. Momentous feelings and ideas are conveyed through delicate touches which are indirect and may appear trivial unless we ponder over their implications. Tagore achieves much of the effect through his imagery which is rich, delicate, suggestive and original.

Annotations

All this wealth: the wealth of love. Thy will is ever taking shape: the heart of the poet works perfectly according to God's will. Captivate: capture.
