      The short story Araby by James Joyce is taken from his collection of stories Dubliners. This story describes about a boy and his fascination for a girl, who is known as Mangan's sister in the story. Just to fulfill the demand of the girl the boy went to Araby, in order to give her something precious, purchased from the fair, the grand oriental festival Araby, which was held in Dublin between 14th and 19th May in 1894. But ultimately the boy could not get his desired objective and his dreams are not fulfilled.

      The story can be taken as a frustrated quest for the ideal. Araby stands as a symbol of the ideal for which a man craves. Araby together with the girl represents for the boy the ideal of beauty and romance. In the drab surroundings of Dublin city the boy found the essence of romance in the beautiful girl and in her offer to him to go to Araby. But ultimately is search for ideal was baffled, because his dream land Araby did not come up to his ideal.

      The short story records the universal frustration in the search for ideal. It is highly symbolical deep in the human heart there is the the craving for beauty and romance. Every man wishes to left himself out of the drab surroundings and get the thrill of romance and beauty. Mangan's sister is for the boy, the embodiment of this romance and beauty, whereas Araby becomes the dreamland for the boy. The boy's journey into the dreamland of Araby at the command of his lady love who's image he carries in his heart symbolises the universal yearning for ideal beauty. The basic symbolic theme of the story is human failure to get in actuality the ideal world and as a result, the dullness, the disillusionment imposed upon him signifying universal failure and frustration, leads us to the conclusion that in life we may not get our desired thing always.
