      Shakespeare composed 154 sonnets in total. What however is unique here Shakespeare's deviations from the conventional pattern of Petrarchan Sonnet writing. Instead of following the beaten track of the theme of love, Shakespeare used very unique concepts in his Sonnet. He has addressed his deep attachment and passionate longing for his male friend in Sonnets 1 to 126. After his sequence, Shakespeare's theme goes for his deep adoration for a mysterious lady whom he called "the dark lady" of the Sonnet. Thus Shakespeare has treated the subject matter and theme of his sonnets from a very unique perspective.

      The Shakespearean Sonnet is also very unique from the point of structure also. Every Shakespearean Sonnet has 3 quatrains and having a concluding couplet. Each quatrain contains and carries on the theme of the basic argument of the Sonnet and the climax is reached at the end. There is a pause after each quatrain and the quatrains says the subject, while the couplet sums it up. And finally, some discussion should be included regarding the rhyme scheme of a Shakespearean Sonnet those are as follows:

      Each Shakespearean Sonnet maintains 7 rhymes instead of 5 of a typical Petrarchan Sonnet they are, a b a b, c d c d, e f e f, g g. this is how a Shakespearean Sonnet is constructed.
