Summary

      Hopkins returns to the scene of the shipwreck. The chief sister had the privilege of divine glimpse of Christ, the only Lord or the Head of the world. The adverse circumstances failed to cloud her vision. Christ should provide protection and relief to the nun from this situation. She appeals to Christ to come forward to her rescue as He is the only one who has power over the living and the dead. She surrenders before her Lord Christ praying that Christ should accomplish his work quickly and establish his supremacy.

Line by Line Analysis

Lines 1-4: But how shall I.....the Master: The poet tries to express here his experience of being united or his consummation with Christ.

Lines 5-8: Ipse, the only one.....doom there

Ipse: derived from Latin means himself the poet.

Christ who is considered as King must act immediately and do the needful and establish his supremacy over the living and the dead. The chief nun is proud of her Master Christ and wants him to come forward quickly to accomplish his task in relation to the nuns.
